Appleby Traveller Horse Fair

What could be a better place to practice your photographic skills than Appleby Horse Fair? Once a year this picturesque Cumbrian village hosts Europe’s biggest gathering of Gypsies and Travellers. Horses are washed in the river and chariots raced down the street while horse tack and all manner of other things are sold in pop-up market stalls. With so much culture and action in one place and with an expert tutor on hand to give tips, advice and inspiration, you’re bound to come home with some fantastic images.

Itinerary:

Friday 5th:

- Today will be spent travelling to our accommodation in the nearby town of Penrith.
- For those who arrive in time, we’ll all meet up for dinner and a drink in a local pub.

Saturday 6th:

- This morning after breakfast we’ll have a photography lesson, introducing the settings and techniques we’re likely to use at the fair and looking at the work of other photographers for artistic inspiration.
- Then we’ll head to into Appleby village, where the fair is in full swing.
- After capturing the action at the river Eden, we’ll grab some lunch nearby and look at some of the pictures on the back of our cameras.
- Afterwards we’ll visit the ‘flashing lane’ where horses are shown off by being raced up and down the road.
- In the evening we’ll head back to Penrith for dinner and a review of the day’s images.

Sunday 7th:

- After checking out of our accommodation we’ll drive back to the fair and explore the market and camping area- a fantastic opportunity for observational documentary photos.
- There will also be chance to capture more images from the river, the flashing lane and the general atmosphere surrounding the event.
- Then it’s back to Penrith for a presentation of the group’s best images from the weekend over lunch.
- Afterwards we’ll pick up our bags and head to the station for our trains home.

Includes:

- Expert tuition and worksheets for the weekend.
- Road transport to the start and end of the walk.
- Carefully planned itinerary with Frui's guidance of the best areas to shoot from.
- All bookings.
- Nightly Photo feedback session.
