For the last two years, we've has taken groups of intrepid photographers to the jam-packed celebrations in nearby Lewes. This year we're photographing the festivities in the smaller town of Battle. Here, ‘bonfire societies’ make processions through the town’s ancient narrow streets. Dressed as saxons, convicts, smugglers and French revolutionaries, this parade is a riot of elaborate costumes, all holding flaming torches and creating a truly photographic spectacle. Health and safety nightmare, yes! So this is not for the faint hearted.

The night will culminate with a bonfire and burning of an effigy (usually a satirical take on a political figure!) in front of historic Battle Abbey- a truly evocative photographic opportunity.

Itinerary

Saturday:

• Transport to the town has yet to be confirmed- we will send out details nearer the time but it should be possible to arrive by train or car before lunch, before any road closures come into force.
• Lunch in Battle and an introductory photography lesson
• Afterwards we'll head out into the streets and take photographs as the atmosphere builds in the town
• Check in to hotels and B&Bs
• As night falls and the parades set off, we'll be there capturing portraits and action shots
• After that we'll head to a pre-booked restaurant for some dinner
• Head back out to the Abbey Green to witness the bonfire being lit and the effigy burnt!
• Drink and enjoy the atmosphere!
• Back to our accommodation in the town
  

Sunday:

• Late Brunch with your tutor and a review of images from the previous night
• Train back home
